Triggered by Tom's Diesel Shay contribution,
the MEW railcar of Bill Schopp came to my mind.

For those who don't know Bill Schopp, he was a modeler ("The Brass Butcher"),
who wrote for Model Railroad Craftsman beginning in the Fifties.

One of countless weird models he built,
was a Model Engineering Works gas mechanical Railcar,
which he placed on two PFM Shay trucks.

He later built a second one for a customer in Sweden,
this one still exits and was sold at Fleabay 15 years ago.

I happen to have both a MEW railcar, and two extra Shay trucks.

This weekend I built a new floor for the car,
and now I am in the progress of soldering appropriate bolsters to it.

Next will have to find a suitable transfer gearbox.

Gearbox found...
A tower drive, left over from a balky brass diesel.

Haven't got square tubing yet to extend the shafts,
so silicone tubes have to do for testing.

A screwdriver substitutes, for the gear-motor that is on order.
With this arrangement, the motor should fit into the baggage compartment.

Any idea if there are (brass?) cardanic joints available?

I found one and part of a second one, in my parts box ....
Would be nice to have complete prototypical drive shafts, revolving under the carbody.

**IF** my eyes would be still up to the task, I would build them from brass .... it's not so hard to do,.
of course, I may substitute NWSL joints, and hide them under some sort of cover.

....Ddisregard my message....

Have found plenty of those online, even locally.
I am amazed what is available today!

R.C. car racers and truck modelers, have many things we may utilize.

It's good that you found the parts you need.
I am looking forward to seeing your 'genius' mechanicals !  :brill:

I have found some AMAZING mechanical parts in these ^^ categories on eBay.  :thumb:

The prices $$$ have been very affordable too.  :)

It can take a while looking ...  :time:

... but it's all there.  :P
