My On30 shelf layout is currently on hold.

In the meantime I'm organizing all of my modeling stuff
(free flight aeromodelling, amateur rocketry, model railroading, and military modeling)
and getting rid of what I don't need anymore.

In that process I've found a number of HO scale kits,
so I decided to build a small layout that can fit in my bedroom with the wife's permission.
Hence a 1'x 4'  Blank Slate:

Here are a few of the kits that are available to use:

The Keystone Shay kit is HOn3 even though the box says HOn30.
The Chivers Davenport is HOn30 but I have a NG&SL article on converting the Bachmann 0-4-0 to HOn3.

Some more kits:

I think I will keep all the rolling stock to 20 scale feet or so.
I have 6 of the Taurus 20ft. ore cars.
I wonder how hard it would be to chop 10 feet off of the Rail Line boxcars just for fun.

Now for a track plan that might hold all this stuff!

Hi Derek

Pleased to see you have found a good space to work with.  :thumb:

I made an N-scale layout, back in the day, the main depot part of which was 15" x 3' 6" ...

... best layout I ever built, possibly cos it was self contained, finishable & operated well.  :)

I can see 1' x 4' as being the basis of a really  C   L  lil' operating & scenic layout.

I was into making buildings then & I already see my favorite kit, in your HO hoard ! ...

... 'The Grand Central Gold Mining Co.' ... WHAT A CLASSIC !  :pimp:

The ore-bins & oil-tank look like interesting Craftsman Kits as well ...  N I C E !  :)

Somehow I think the 1st thing to plan for, is to loose the 'flatness' of the base somehow.  L:

Great motive power kits & rolling stock for a good mining layout as well ...  :thumb:

... if a big load of kits fell out of the sky in front of me ...

... I couldn't ask for a better selection !  :P

I'm envious of the Thomas Yorke 'Ramshackle Engine Shed' as well !  :bg:

I think I might have some photos of Thomas's kit ... somewhere ?  ???

Great plasterwork I guess ?  L:

Thanks for the posts on the mine Si.

It's a challenge to fit these kits in the space,
with a track plan that makes sense.
Tis a puzzle I tell you!

A couple of plans that caught my eye are by Iain Rice.
Part of what he calls The Vertical Railway.
I flipped them so they face the right way to fit my space:

Lot's of track and linear.

Hmmmmm...

Lots of spots for switching.

Potential for sure.
