I agree that Brushless DC motors are our future. Once the HO size motors get sensors there will be little reason to use a brushed motor except at the low price end of the market. I tried a 12 mm diameter BLDC motor and it worked well once the speed was high enough to provide a decent feedback signal but for low speed operation it was useless. Stepper motors are noisy (at least the ones I used were) at speeds we would use. I used some for rotating a target wheel for a magnetic sensor and it made far too much noise to use in a train. They are great for precision positioning, like a turntable or a turnout actuator.
