Make sure the clips for the shafts on the trucks are securely fitted.

The shafts should be firmly fitted,
no movement outwards from the trucks.

This a reasonably easy fix and very cheap to fix  the Bachmann Shay shaft clip problem that I have been having.

Bachmann have no stock of drive shaft clips for the Shay,
so the option was to buy complete trucks to repair faulty locos.

The shafts are available, but no means of holding the shaft in position,
so I got thinking.

After thinking of a solutions for this problem for the past ten years,
I have come up with this solution to fix the problem.

Dismantle the trucks,
and drill a hole to fit a 12BA bolt in the frame above the axle hole.

Drill a hole in some brass strip and bend the strip to fit over the shaft clip,
so it will be putting pressure on the clip when the bolt is tightened.

Refit the old clips over the shaft and place the brass strip over the clip,
and tighten the bolt and nut.

Make sure the bolt head is clear of the wheel.

Some trimming to be done on the strip at the top of the truck.

Ready to be fitted to the loco,
after priming the other truck, a top coat of paint, and weathering.

I don't have a spare chassis at the moment,
but I may need to trim the brass strip at the top of the truck, for clearance.

It took about one hour to repair both trucks,
and they roll freely, with the gears engaged at all times.

:2t:

For the more experienced/adventurous person,
they may want to drill and tap the truck but I'm not that adventurous.
