Hi everyone.

In an effort to have a more relaxed atmosphere I have decided to start my own forum.

There is not a lot of content at this time.

I hope you will all be willing to help out in that area and over time we may have a nice home here.

Please..... relax..... and have fun......but......please also use some restraint and know when to say when....if you know what I mean....do use some restraint.

I hope I can get everything up and running fairly fast.

This is a first for me and a learn as I go deal.

Wish me luck....have fun.

Hot

Hi Hotshot

Thanks for making this site available to one and all.

May I ask my first silly question.   What is a "MANA"

I would like to wish you great success with this new site and look forward to learning about model trains, and look forward to meeting new friends in this forum.

Hi Steven and welcome.  :cb:

I apologize for the shortsightedness in not allowing

for our OO gauge counterparts from the UK. :X

I renamed the HO forum HO/OO.

Congratulations, guys. Looks like your railroad forum is going to fly. I registered to help bolster your numbers, but you probably won't see much of me. I'm not into the hobby, and I waste too much time over at my own site. :D

Lots of luck.

Hiya John, thanks for stoppin by!!

Now that your semi retired, you might need to get a hobby...............and theres none better than this one my friend :thumb:

For those who dont know John, Mr John Bridge is a renomned Tilesetter and author of 2 bestselling DIY books on the subject.

He's also a personal friend and the site he mentioned is one I have been involved with for quite some time ( long enough to hit around 11,000 posts helpin DIY'ers and Professionals in the field)

He's kinda famous ( or is that infamous John?? ;) )

Thanks again for droppin by and say hi to Patti for me ( spelled it right that time didnt I ;) )

It's not fame. I think of it more as notoriety. :D

Believe me, I won't have time to take up new hobbies. I keep saying I'm retired, but Patti keeps coming up with things like, "Well, you're still going to be working, aren't you?" How can a guy truly retire with stuff like that going on?

Take care, folks. Lots of luck with the forum. Looks like a winner. ;)

Hi again,To all of You. To answer OregonOn30,Mesa,Wa. is 30 mi. north of Pasco where US 395 meets Washington 17. It's one of the little dots on the map, about 500 people. I commute to the Pasco BNSF yard each afternoon where I do in-bound inspections on the trains 'till 11:00 PM then commute home. :p2:

Welcome Lightwave!

Guys this is Mark from Engine House Services in Green Bay Wi.

He is not the guest speaker I was talking about...he does the loco decoder installs for him..I get a treat now and then when I stop by and they let me nose around the workbench at stuff they are working on. He does some amazing things in there.

Wish I could have had my camera along when he installed a  Tsunami sound decoser into Thomas for a customer.... :bg: :bg: :bg:  was too cool!!

Welcome Mark!!

Hi Dave,

I was wondering where everyone went. I’m still plugging along (slowly) with my On30 layout. My HOn30 Center Line is in the May issue of Small Layout Scrapbook.

Good luck on the new board.

Hi folks - wow, three welcomes before my first post!

Yes Paladin - not far from you in fact, out in the Yarra Valley not far from Warburton.

I picked up a link to this forum from the On30 Conspiracy list and have spent the last couple of hours browsing, it's a great forum with heaps of terrific content.  Since I prefer forums (fora?) to e.mail lists I look forward to participating.

I model narrow gauge in more scale/gauge combinations than is probably good for me (see http://gn15.ozforces.com.au) and have recently acquired a B/man OS framed 2-8-0 - what a lovely bit of gear that is - so it looks like a vaguely American inspired freelance logging line (or something)  is in the offing....

Cheers,  Andy :)

Hi Andy.

Noticed that your Avatar shows a loco  4-2-0 is there really such a beast, if so I for one would like to see it. It would definately be a little different.

LOL - can't even remember where I found it!  Google just turned up a real one though - scroll about half way down http://www.steamlocomotive.com/union/ to the 'Chicago Historical Society' heading...

Well that just goes to show.  if someone can think of something you can be pretty sure someone else has already built it.

The picture shows it as been a fairly large loco. Its just the sort of thing that our esteemed leader would build

Thanks for the feedback

Hi I'm Dave. I build in 1/87 scale. I don't have any trains. I've been building a couple buildings and some vehicles. I'm scratch building and doing some kit bashing. There's some pictures on my Fotki page.

Your English is fine, much better than my french.

I am looking forward to your posts and pictures ( We like pictures ). The forum has members in Germany, France and the UK who model in On30.

Hopefully you will enjoy the forum, should you have any questions feel free to ask

Hi all,

I practise US modelrailroading in N, HO and On30 scales. I already found some extremely interesting subjects on this forum. Long life has Freerails.

See you later.

PS : Salut les Français, je vois déjà quelques têtes connues... Heureux de vous retrouver ici :cb:

Sorry about being so slow on the up take here, I,m one of the computer challenged seniors eveyone knows is out there. Thanks for the welcome, been looking at On30 and decided to jump in with both feet. Purchased a few engines this past weekend at the show in Tampa, buoght some 44-tonners(the ones with two drives) to build a critter or two and am now trying to decide on a trackplan to fit upstairs in my garage(the room is 16' x 40'). I'm looking forward to picking up and sharing all the information I can get in all aspects of our great pastime.

I have a little rail tractor I should get back to real soon.

LoggerOn30,

Maybe you could generate some MRR $$ with some of that snow as these folks from Aurora, CO.

Just a note to explain something.....you may notice a new member listed on the bottom of the main page, and then all of a sudden they are gone without a trace.

The reason is..We have been busy of late deleting new members who for one reason or another have decided, it is a good idea when they sign up, to have as their homepage link, a porn site or any other that really has no place in a model train forum such as drug suppliers legal or not.

Well...it is NOT a good idea as when this is seen, that new member is immediately deleted and banned .....no questions asked...no second chances.

Just in case you had noticed and were wondering.

Three cheers and a glass of cold suds for the General and his guards. I am glad to know that won't be put up with here. My nephew likes to look at this site with me. We are working on him, bringing him into the Brotherhood (and Sisterhood) of the rails. He doesn't need to see something like that while having fun here. Keep up the good work !!

Thanks BRR!

We shall do our best!

You may see referances about wearing a thong now and then.... but thats all in jest and about as bad as we let it get....never any lude pix or anything.

We want parents.....and the kids.... to feel assured that this will be a safe place to visit. :cb:

Let's see, how many gondolas do I need to carry 6 80# bags of manure out to the garden? Looks like I need to see the financial officer about an increase in the building budget and additional right-of-way surveys.:cb: Almost forgot, what kind of grade do I need to go from the upstairs of the garage down to the garden? The trip down may not be too bad, but the return will need a double-header! :thumb: Wait! That means I need more motive power! Oh-boy, back to the finance office.(Better put on more chapstick, :bg:  this could get expensive!)

Couldn't use a gantry, the wind whipping through the mountains here in Florida would make it too dangerous for the crew. But I do like the idea of diner and a movie, any excuse to get to eat out. :thumb:

Howdy Y'all. Guess I'm the new kid here. I've been snooping around your site and have gotten a bunch of entertainment and tips already.  I have a train room with some benchwork and have been looking for inspiration. I believe I'll find some here!

Say Hotshot, got a question for ya. Your layout looks mighty familiar to me. Were you at Trainfest the last couple years? I believe I talked to you about those dandy looking logs, and you told me they were ironwood.

Anyhoo, thanks for creating a site like this.

G'day Schutzie

You say you need inspiration, be assured you have come to the right place.

Tells us please what scale you are working with, and the era you modeling.

I assume the "WI" in your location is Wisconsin. If we get any more members in cow country they may form a break away group.

Enjoy

Yessir, Wisconsin is da place. I reckun I might should spell that out in my profile.

I have collected a bunch of HO scale stuff over the years and started a couple HO layouts. Logging seems to be my focus and early 20th century is my timeframe. I really enjoy the "un-mainstream" equipment, like the little climax on the corner of this page. It gives us the chance to kitbash just like the owners of the little backwoods logging operations did.

Then On30 began coming to the forefront. Sure do like the stuff that Bachmann and some of the independents are producing. So now I'm kinda sorta headed in that direction with a few locos and kits. I am actually toying with the concept of using both scales to create a forced perspective...but that's just thinking.

Hi Doug...and Welcome!

No that was not me.

But,I know of the guys you are talking about...I was disappointed that they were not at the last show...I wanted to see how they were coming along.

I have some photo's I took of their layout on a disc someplace.

Oh well...maybe they will be back next year.

I dont think you are going to have to worry about that. When it gets cold up here, not much to do but drink beer, stay warm, work on our layouts, and talk to our friends here at Freerails. :mex::dude::cb::fro::cool::p2:  Maybe you could send us some of that warm you have down under.

Hotshot,

The one I'm thinking of was there in November. He was about in the middle of the room as I recall. He had copys of a layout that was featured in NGSLG over a period of issues (I don't recall the name of the layout right off :bang:) that he was patterning his layout from. All handlaid ties and rail and turnouts.

At any rate, what did you use for your logs and stumps? I have been harvesting honeysuckle around the house, which has a decent bark but not as pronounced as your logs.

Thank you. Don't mind me, I'm just going to lurk for a while as I learn more about this hobby. I was given a little Bachmann On30 diesel along with some track and a power pack recently which has sparked my interest in this hobby.:)

Good morning folks,
I don't write often to the many On30 lists that I am on, since it tends to not only take me away from those things that I like to do but also gets me in trouble in short order.  As  I sometime tell new friends I am like warm sand on the beach for the first 20 seconds it is nice and warm after that I am an iritant.  I will write as I am moved to either debate, add to, or ask further comments or questions.
As a short intro I am 60 years old, retired, and have been an On30 modeler for 30+ years.  I started a group years ago known as the Manchester Mini Bunch, so named after the town that I lived in, Manchester, Maryland.  I now reside on the Eastern shore of Maryland with my wife, dog and cat.  My railroad, the Deep Run RR, reflects a short line down here around the 50's time frame.  The railroad is 99% hand laid with two older sections that are PECO.  I like to scratch build most of my structures but have started to use Stoney Creek and Deerfield kits.  I am using the Lenz/Atlas DCC system and have a once a month operating group.
I write a short On30 column for the Light Iron Digest and have had articles in 48 to the foot, Model Railroading, RMC, and Narrow Guage Downunder.  I believe I am the only American to be so lucky.  Well, I think by now you are bored enough so I will go back to lurking and will pop my head up as so moved.

Steve

Hi,
I am going to direct you to my best friends website and ask you to poke around in there, to see pictures of mine and a few other On30 modlers.  Please go to:  http://www.gcdesigngroup.com.  This is Garry Cerrones site a fine modeler and someone who produces items for the O scale crowd as well as On30, amongst other things.  Also, you will see items that are shot on my railroad in my LID column.  At the moment I do not have any good pictures of my current and final railroad but will in the future have something.

Not sure what an "

If that welcome is for Travis Glass from Frisco, TX, that goes double. Old Travis is a consumate modeler whose work keeps "showing me up"-drat! This guy Glass is also not traditional, forsakeing dcc for the ultimate craziness-Radio Control! Just what does he think he's doing? There are apples all over the road here in Big D, he didn't just upset the cart, he derailed it. By the way, welcome Mr Glass, I know you can take a ribbin'.

If any of you ever get to Dallas and want to check out what Travis & I are up to, drop a line here and if the sun is shinin', the old Mogollon Railway will be up & runnin'.

Hello the friends model makers.
I present myself, I am French and I have made model making for 7 years.
I started with of Oe, with MagicTrain de Fleichmann, which I arranged much.
I arranged a little Zero too. Recently, I discovered your achievements, and that plait me much.
I will test On30. I have Davenport DCC and one Porter cd. I should have Shay soon. I start, then are lenient. Currently, not having ideas for a network, I manufacture buildings.
This forum is very interesting for your easy ways and achievements.
Thank you with you.
I am used for myself of an automatic translator to discuss with you.

Excuse the faults.

Just joined, name is Gerry Bullock. Gnever modelled until 2002, from that intro you should guess that my passion is Gn15 - Large scale, small space.
I'll post details of the two finished Gn15 layouts in due course. One is mine the other my Club's Basildon MRC in Essex,UK.
Have a number of other layouts in progress including a Kid's layout (for Club) that is set at twilight and works through a sequence when a Start Button is pushed - again more later, 2008 I think.
Cheers GerryB.

Welcome aboard Gerry.............You'll fit right in amongst the narrow gaugers weve got here...Bunches of us LOL

Not alot of G gaugers here although I do know a few....Lots of On30 guys though along with woody doing 3/8" stuff (my 3/8" stuff is go fast zoom a zoom zoom kinda stuff (see My new 0-4-0 thread)

Trains are my first and lifelong passion but 1/32 digital slot cars on a permanent scenic'd layout are proving to be alot of fun also.(i learned to speak true english over at Slotforum international...Lots of guys from the UK over there)

Cant wait to see the layouts youve got...........G scale really lends itself to some fabulous detailing!!!

Dont forget to look around, weve a few artists floating around here and there with some dang nice work to show for their efforts!!!

Gerry-welcome to this site. Would you believe that I know of at least 2 Gn15 modelers in the Dallas, TX area???!!! In the new Light Iron Digest, Tom Yorke has an article about a wonderful Gn15 locomotive he is doing, built upon a Bachmann On30 2-6-0. The stuff I have seen is most impressive. My own stuff is in 3/8 scale running on 16.5mm track. Since your equipment is large enough (dare I say this?), have you thought about using radio control? Check out the r/c section of the narrow gauge pages in freerails.

Glad to have you with us, and from Texas-HOWDY!

Don-some fellows may actually have a problem with registering. My friend Bill has tried several times, I even "helped" him once, but he never received the e mail message to reply with. My messages from freerails go to what is called "bulk" and I imagine that some mail services may toss out the messages due to some sort of spam control of other censorship issue. Computers are wonderful things, sometimes they make beautiful bonfires when they act badly!! Maybe there's something sinister afoot here, maybe it is government subversion or the Taliban at work.

I was not trying to be unkind to this person, but He/She has registered on many occassions, the name and homepage changes each time and some of the homepage links were not to our liking.

The removal from our members is not something that we take lightly. and it is only done after careful consideration.

I was prompted to make the above post after He/She has done the same thing again, Twice in 72 hours.  And this at the same time as we were Hacked. It was just wearing a little thin.

My post will not change a thing, as I am sure He/She will never read it. So we just have to watch out for the next time

Hey there everyone. My name's Lorne. Just stumbled apon this forum and looks like a good place to go to for info.

I haven't done a whole lot with this hobby yet...just getting back into it. Right now I'm just working on designing an On30 layout that's a bit different than the average On30 style. Mine's going to be a sectional layout, continuosly growing, and not just logging or mining. There will be several industries involved. I guess you can say it's a narrow gauge shortline with standard gauge potential. I'ld get bored if there was just logging or just mining...want everything. I picked this scale for the detail potential. Love details.

Anyways, I look forward to reading your ideas and sharing a few of my own.

Welcome mudge85, Mr Bill Caldwell. He resides in the home overlooking the Mogollon Railway. Just to show how big Bill's home is, he lives in Dallas, TX and the Mogollon runs in Texas' Big Bend, some 600 or so miles away! Everybody knows that Texans have big homes and lots of property anyway. Sneeze ya later...

Hey guys-this morning, both Bill & I got a "Turkish hacker:" when we went to freerails or clicked on the url. If I knew who this hacker was, I'd give him a "Turkish suprise" and introduce him to St Peter!!! Looks like things are back to "normal" now.

Thanks, Don...that's what Woodie calls you...right?

Anyway thanks about welcoming me aboard as several others have done. Sure is a lot better than my last attempt at an organized forum.

I mentioned that I had a little R/C stuff to add...I think I'll put it on the R/C page.

Bill (mudge)

P.S. I'd like to give that Turkish hacker a piece of my mind but I've only got one piece left.

Hi Mudge,

How do I add to my own home page with location, interests, etc?
Just open your home page in another window and copy the URL from the address bar....( Hold the cursor over the url window and right click and select "copy" )

Then just go to your post window ( where you are writing the post on Freerails)  and right click and select paste on that screen....that will automatically make it a link when you finish writing what you want in the post and hit send.

How do I use the Emoticons?
Just  left click on whichever one you want to use in the post...it should automatically appear wherever the cursor is in the text.

Don't try to add an emoticon as the first thing in a post or it wigs out at times and wont allow you to type for some reason.

I am working with the service providers at this time to get an upgrade to the latest software for the forum and maybe some of that will smooth out.

How do I use the other type faces than Verdana and how do I change the SIZE?
For this part sometimes you have to start the post or just type one letter...then....hold the left mouse button down and drag the cursor over the text you have ...that will highlight it...then you can choose the font and size and color...etc... and everything will change.

From there out the font and other changes will stay with what you have chosen.

Hope that helps out! :pimp::mex::cb:

How do I transfer pictures from my files and folders. As an attachment?

That gets a little trickier.

As we keep the forum free for all users...I try to keep costs down by not allowing uploads to our server....that keeps bandwidth usage and storage space down and in turn costs to me.

You need to upload your images to a server in order to post them here.

If you already have them stored on a host site then all you need to do is copy the image location from the URL window and click the little icon above the posting screen that looks like a dog eared page with 3 balls on it. The second Icon from the right on the top row.

If you don't have them uploaded to the web.....I recommend   http://www.photobucket.com.

They will host your images for free up to a certain number...I forget what it is as I passed that a long time ago and pay for my own image hosting.

Here is a link to how to do it from an image hosting site...I demonstrate with Photobucket because it is what I use.

What am I doing in the hobby.... Not much. I just decided to give this hobby a try a few months ago when I wandered over into the train section of the LHS (Local Hobby Shop) from the RC area. I've been building and flying planes most of my life. Lately, my interest in flying has gotten a lot less.

Like most people here (I imagine) I had trains when I was a kid, and I've been very inspired by the photos I've seen of all the talented modlers here on the net and in the narrow gauge magazines. I'm fairly certain I can build just about anything I see modelers building, but the rugged finishing is a skill I'll have to aquire.

Right now, I have a BVM Little-Bose box cab conversion kit for the Bachman On30 Davenport. I plan on getting the Davenport at the LHS after work today. While I'm assembling that, I plan of practicing my painting skills and even try some weathering on some old HO box cars I have.

Cheers,

Wiz

I am sure if you built airplanes, scratchbuilding structures/Rolling stock will come easy to you!! Its no different here than the RC hobby......learning some of the basic hints and tips goes a long ways!!

Theres lots of Little tips that help to create that rugged /rough look.....when you get to that point all you need do is ask and one of the guru's who've been there done that will pitch in with an answer I am sure.

For starters though heres TIP #1

Little things like PRE -Distressing your lumber using a rasp or a Razor saw (scrape the face of the wood along the razor saw) will help give heavy weathered definition to your boards. An Alcohol India Ink Wash will then define this by shadowing the deeper grains of the wood. Dont forget to add your nail holes by poking a Pick into the boards as if each board were nailed....again the weathering will help define each hole!!

TG,

Tip number one was great!

Thanks a million.

What ratio of India ink to alcohol do you usually use? I'm assumming it's pretty low because that stuff pretty dark and heavy. Back in the days before computers I used that stuff regularly for inking plat maps and other such drawings.  In case you're wondering, I'm a Land Surveyor and Civil Engineer.

Just to introduce myself. Altho I'm a Brit I have modelled US style railroads for about 50 years, firstly in N gauge then  1:19 garden rail with live steam. Due to advancing age and increasing vandalism this was abandoned. Then Bachmann started their On30 range ----

Hi all, this forum has just come to our notice thanks to a post on a yahoo narrow gauge group. The rc idea gives possible life to a project we've been thinking about for a couple of years now, modelling the Alan Keef Ltd. monorail system, until now we'd been wrestling with the idea of copper strip along the sides of the rail carrying girder but radio control puts a whole new twist on things & makes it a definite possibility. Can't guarantee fast results from our modelling but who knows, the monorail idea has been bugging us for a while, so......... After visiting the Alan Keef open day for the last 3 or 4 years and seeing the monorail equipment each time it nags away at us more each time we see it, we mentioned the idea to Mr Keef himself who said if we ever managed to do it he'd love to see the results, well, maybe now.........  It'll probably be done in 1:32 or 1:24 scale if we dont go nuts from trying, aside from gearing down a motor to a suitable speed the biggest problem now seems to be making the track robust enough (at last ! handbuilt track that we dont have to worry about gauge for & cant get wrong.......oh yeah ? just watch me !)

Happy modelling

Dave & Lorraine-you have found our secret meeting place! A monorail line is the ultimate narrow gauge and very "doable" in larger scales and especially with r/c. Let us know how things go, some of us are crazy enough to believe in Santa Claus, monorails, and...r/c.

Welcome Aboard Dave............modelling in 3/8 scale can Be fun but it also can be frustraing as there's not as much available as in the O and G scales for detailing etc......Not to say there isnt anything, on the contrary, there are items available to be sure.

Woody will be pleased to have another 3/8 scale model train guru around and I model 1/32 for slot cars and have been known to beg a few manufacturers for Goodies  (isnt that right Rich :))

Rich of http://www.rslaserkits  fame was kind enough to make 1/32 scale stairs & stringers for those of us  who decided if 1/4 scale was good,, 3/8 had to be even Better  ROFL:moose:

Another Dave!

Welcome to Freerails, glad to have you here.

I always thought a monorail would be cool to see modeled ever since I saw a posting of a You Tube video of one here on the forum somewhere....maybe now I will!

Best of luck on your adventure!

Hello Hotshot!

New here to Free Rails. I have been searching this site for about a week or 2 now. Decided to register because it seems everyone on this forum is down to earth or at least down to something. Thanks for letting be a part of this crazy mixed up forum. I really like the characters on this site. Hope I can contribute to help wherever I can in the modeling world of ON30. I have been modeling NG for about 10 years. Was in HO for about 40 years, before I found ON30. I like the unresrtiction of standards in ON30. Everthing goes! Some people don't understand it. I have a love for this scale. I can model however I want, and rivet counters can't say a thing about it. Hooray!!!

Welcome BS-it's nice to see another ol' Texas boy on the scene. As for On30, unless you are modeling a Cuban sugar cane line or one of the obscure US thirty inchers, you can do whatever you want. Yes, I know of one "finescale" On30 group that is doing an "RGS/D&RG" layout with K locos and strict scale standards...this is On30...finescale??? Say what?

Be sure to join us on Sunday nights at 9PM Texas time for our little weekly chats. We manage to discuss a great many subjects and offend most everyone. That's on the Line Shack/flashchat section of this site. Be there or be square...

Hai!

Im from a small town in bum&*#% Montana, getting back into the hobby. I run HO standard gauge, and will eventually get around to building a proper railroad. I like 1900's-1940's steam logging.

Me and my heisler are happy to find this place!

Welcome to the site. There are some truly great modelers here and nit pickers are generally banned..unless you are one! If you are into talking %^&* on Sunday night, you might try the Line Shack (flashchat) which happens around 9PM CST (check your local listings). We chat about things in general and bs in particular with an emphasis on model railroading. Things can get very lively and you may find out why Mike is called Mad Mike...it's not because he's angry or anything like that.

Hello everyone! My name is Matthew and I'm currently living in Medical Lake, Washington, just west of Spokane. I grew up building a lot of 1/48 scale model airplanes (over twenty years ago!) but have never modeled anything railroad related.

I have always been fascinated with dioramas and I think that is what initially got me interested in model railroading. Over the past year I've been getting the "bug" to try my hand at a micro/small layout. I have a few different plans constantly running through my head, but I will probably start out with a straight-forward test track just to make sure I have the basics down.

I've been lurking here at Free Rails for a few months now and this really seems like a great site. I look forward to posting a work log of my project(s)! I'll put out the standard disclaimer that due to work, I just don't have the amount of free time that I would like (does anyone?), so project progress will be slow. I think that's about all for now. Take care.

No I don't think anyone does....maybe we should have a set up where forum members could donate a dollar a week and we could play the powerball lottery as a group on a weekly basis in hopes of hitting the big one!  :Woohoo::p2: LOL!

Welcome Matthew,

Glad you posted and said hi.

Demands on our time, defiantly puts a crimp in modeling.   These last 2 months I have been so busy that it seems that the only time I get to do any model building is from 11:30pm. to 1 am. than get up for work at 5:30am.  The other night I was so tired I glued my finger to the workbench,  :) (LMAO) what a move.  After about 5 min and multiple layers of skin I got it off   I haven't been back at the workbench since.

Thanks for the welcome everyone!

Over the past few months I've picked up a few odds and ends and today I got the chance to hook them up. My first "layout" consists of one 36" piece of flex-track in a straight line powered by a $3 swap meet Tyco power pack.

Increase speed... stop. Reverse... increase speed... stop. Forward... increase speed... stop. Repeat for about 15 minutes... I must be easy to please because I enjoyed it. Woohoo!

:glad:This is my first post here,I'am happy to have found this place!!

I'am 66 years old and have been In a buch of hobbies over the years,I'am retired ARMY.Have be tinkering with model rail roads for 50 years, also radio control planes, boats, cars.I have an interest in radio controled model trains. At present I'am working in "N" scale,my ho is in storage for lack of room.

I even tryed to RC an HO train,I used an micro recever, and an small speed control, and used an flat car to hold an 6VoltDC 1200ma  battery it worked real good.So I think the feture of modelrailroading is RC things keep getting smaller all the time,I think the new battires are the key.

Welcome Jim-I see from your post that you are interested in radio control. Check out the section(s) here in Freerails about r/c. You should be able to equip most HO locos with onboard batteries and receivers, even N scale can be fitted with some work. I have been running wireless for some years now and wouldn't consider any other way.

All you new folks, try to get with us on Sunday night at 9PM (central) for the flashchat discussion. You can never tell how the evening will turn out, even with an established topic. I believe this Sunday night is scenery and tips for realism done cheaply.

The wacko registrations still keep coming. They are keeping Dave very busy checking them and deleteing as required. It is a daily chore.

This making it difficult to post a welcome to new registrations, for even those that look like genuine railroders may well not be.

The management is working on it.

Don-I thought we were wackos anyway! Actually, I'm from Waco, TX. A few years ago, the national (US) media called us wackos from Waco, so I guess the term stuck!

Welcome to all the new folks in advance, I sometimes forget to write. Sort of like Herb, we have both forgotten how to write, at least so you can read it. Remember cursive? For years, I thought they were talking about speech patterns & my mama taught me not to curse. Later on, I studied under some doctors to learn how they wrote, it all worked out. I now curse and write lousy.

Welcome Michel, it's great to hear from another narrow gauger.  Try to join us for the flashchat on Sunday nights-9PM Central time in the US. I know that this time is in the wee hours of the morning for you, but you are invited anyway! I believe Don is thinking about other times that may be better for you, drop him a line with your input. Perhaps Hotshot could embed a univeral clock for the members to give us an idea of what time it is where members are? I've been searching for an application like this for some time as i've got e-friends in Hong Kong, UK, Deutschland, The Netherlands, Australia, and all sorts of other places.

I find that this works as an advantage at times for those of us in the US. If you can't sleep at 3AM, PM Palidan, and ask him what time it is down under.

Been there, done that.

Welcome Termite-Herb should talk, he doesn't go into post offices any more because they have photos of him on the wall! I know this because I saw his photo next to mine the other day.....

If you want to jabber with Herb and the other refugees from Gilligan's Island, make some time on Sunday night at 9PM CDT(in the US) and join in the "business meetings" on flashchat right here on this channel. You'll be glad you did.

Hello all,

Just joined. My interest is ON30 logging. Currently  (1) bashing a Bachmann Shay, (2) converting an HO Mantua Heisler into an ON30 Heisler (Wiseman kit) and (3) building the Rusty Stumps water tower.

Hello all,

After Daniel Caso pointed me to this site, I have been reeding here now for some days now, and decided to join in. A few things about me: I'm 35 years old and live in the Netherlands, pretty near to the German border.

My interested is industrial narrow gauge, especialy the peat mining railways. My first attempt in modelling is based on a Regner Feldbahn motorised chassis, and on top of that I want to scratchbuild a Diema DS 40 loco. The scale is G/1:22,5 and it runs on 30mm tracks. Also, I want it to be an RC loco with the Crest Train Engineer H0 system. But sadly I don't have any experience with this, but the members here seem to know a lot about RC systems.

Best regards from the Netherlands, Bart

Welcome Bart-Daniel is a very accomplished modeler and has embraced r/c to operate his railroad. The CREST board is very easy to install-read the instructions but instead of connecting the board's wires to the track pickups,  the wires are connected to a battery. Again, refer to the instructions for getting the transmitter and receiver to interface. Here on Freerails, my friend Trebor is using the Crest system and I am sure he can answer any of your questions. There are various batteries you could use, from 9 volt Alkalines to Ni Cads to Lithium Ion and Lithium Polymer (what I use). Your scale should be large enough to "hide" any of these batteries. Good luck and let us know how you are doing.

Hello Bart

Glad to see that another modeler interested in radio control has joined. I build in O scale (1-48) and Woodie's writings on this forum prodded me to finish a battery powered radio control 0-4-0 that I had started years ago. My radio is Locolink insted of Crest, that I had bought  years before Crest became available. Probably more expensive than the Crest system, but it was the only thing available at the time, and works just fine. Keep us informed, and send some pictures when you are able.

Hi:

Dwayne Ward told me about this site this evening. I model N scale and the JJJ&E is 10x15' multi-leveled Unitrack layout run by DCC. The Unitrack is completely weathered and ballasted and has been in operation for almost nine years.

The JJJ&E models the steam-transition era with an emphasis on steam. I have been retired since 1994. Before I retired I practiced Prosthetic Dentistry in Boston for 30 years.

Besides working on the JJJ&E which is almost 90% completed, I also write articles for N Scale Magazine.

Stay cool and run steam......:cool::cool:

That sounds like a large N scale layout, we would like to see some pictures if at all possible.

PSG-you made it to Dallas, but I'll bet you missed some railroading! Next time. let some of us know, we will put on "the Ritz" and run some trains. And yes, we do run steam.

Woodie:

I didn't have time for any railroading on this trip to Dallas. My wife and I spent the entire time finalizing the plans to build a new house near the Frisco area in the Tribute. My daughter and her husband and two grand daughters live in Frisco. I'll have plenty of time for railroading when I make the move which will be in the February-April time frame.

In the mean time I'm planning a new N scale layout (around the room) in a 20x12' room.

Thanks for the invite. My next trip to Dallas will probably be in November or December.

Welcome Darryl!

I read the e-mail you sent out last week regarding the Yorke Yahoo group management..best of luck in your endeavor.

The Yahoo groups have always been a little too free wheeling for me along with having to re-read the posts in all the responses...hope you can whip that back into shape.

There are a great number of forums and groups on the internet today so my real danger comes from spending too much time looking at what others do rather than doing things myself.

I came across Free Rails last night when I was following links about DaveInTheHat's weathering model tug boats.  Some of his work is here so I came in on his shirt-tales.

Many of you know me already but for those of you who don't here is a short bio.

I have been compulsively building models for over 60 years.  I am not too particular about what I build a model of or what scale it is in.  I simply build whatever I am in the mood for today.  But, most of the time I am building structures, making scenery, and weathering junk.

About 8 years ago I started filming my efforts in backdrop painting just to leave a momento for my grandkids to remember what I like to do.  I sent a couple of copies to close friends who suggested I sell the backdrop painting demonstration.  I did and now film virtually every thing I do.  This requires that I approach each project so as to explain the process to the beginner.  This is great fun but slows down my production.

I wish I could crank out the models like MadMike does and the RustMeister, but I can't.  I did when I was in my 30s and 40s but I can't do that anymore.

I will contribute to discussions that I think I can add something of possible value.

For now I just need to find the "how to post a photo" part of the forum.

For now I just need to find the "how to post a photo" part of the forum.

Here is a link to the how to post pictures thread Darryl.

http://www.freerails.com/view_topic.php?id=185&forum_id=19

As you will see it is a lot easier to do that to explain.

The basic difference is, on other forums, when you press the image button, you get the image tags...[img][/img]....and you insert the image url in between them.

Here you get a box to paste the url in and you hit send after that.

The insert image button is the one with the 3 balls on it in the post reply screen.

Users need to use a photo hosting site to store their photos.

On site photo hosting is not offered, so I can keep the cost of hosting to a minimum, and not be beholding to any group or individual, and thus keep an open flow of information for everyone.

Please feel free to add your site info to your signature, and or post a link to your dvd's and offerings. I have purchased 2 so far and have recommended them here.:thumb:

So far, we are a small community of modelers, and thus we have not yet had any real problems with flaming posts and what not.

Most know that stuff is not allowed, and it gets squashed as soon as possible.

I hope you hang around and pass the word.

Howdy Darryl. Welcome to the site, let me invite you to join in on our Sunday night/Monday morning "talkfest" at 9PM CST, it may be a good bit earlier for you, but you might enjoy chatting with the crew. Many of us have been "down the road" for a long time and gray hair doesn't bother anybody.....just ask Herb! This all happens on the flashchat "line shack". Once again, we hope you enjoy yourself here.

Looked at your link, and saw a couple of videos that look interesting, so expect a snail mail order.

And don't pay too much attention to the comments that that young whippersnapper Woodie makes about me- you gotta know how kids are these days.

Thanks Herb.  I take all snide comments with a big grain of salt.

Question, on the Free Rails pages there is a vertical boilder locmotive that looks like it might be On30.  Is there a link to more information on it?

Darryl.

That loco you refer to is On30.

It was built by Hotshot ( Dave) .

There is a article on it somewhere in amongst all the others, but I can not find it. I am sure Dave will be able to enlighten us.

Thanks Dave for the link.  Neat locomotive.  And your photography is great as well.

Robert Stephens did a series in Finescale Railroader many years back on making a vertical boiler locomotive.  I have all the articles and have purchased all the parts to make the locomotive but simply haven't found the time.

These odd contraptions are very appealing.

Thanks again.

Neat locomotive.  And your photography is great as well.

Daryll, if you can believe this, that was among Dave's FIRST Model rr scratchbuilding projects...........He'd been in the hobby perhaps 12 - 16 months.....

It is Almost as impressive as his Large trestle Bridge but not nearly as impressive as His Scratchbuilt Enginehouse OR his Hon3 Diorama he recently completed.:thumb:

He's definitely a guy to watch..........( i hear he does some pretty fair tilework too for a Truckdriver!! )  :)

Welcome Darryl To Freerails, sorry for the late Welcome.

I'm currently visiting Alaska on business @ Ft Greely.

I did catch a glimps of an old Alaska Railroad passenger car setting on the side of the road at Delta Junction, AK. I guess someone was planning on using it for something not sure what. Weed are taking over it now.

Hi all,

Came across the site whilst searching for MDC Shay construction articles. I see there is one here which is ticking over. I'm on my second build now so if I can I'll contribute to this thread with my efforts.

My interests run to Proto:87 modelling of the Springfield Terminal Railway. Other interests are camping and Volkswagen Westfalia campers.

Cheers,

Craig

Greetings, Ed, and welcome to Freerails!

Lots of On30 people here, and we enjoy meeting others.

Sunday evenings at 10PM Eastern time we have a BS session at FlashChat (click upper RH corner of screen). Sometimes Palidan tells us what the subject is going to be ahead of time. Sometimes we even follow his wishes----sometimes---

Hi all,

I have just joined the group. I mainly model in 7mm scale, 16.5mm guage, having grown up on Southern Australian HO models

The vision behind my models is a preserved ex military line that is now co used for shell grit mining. The preservatuion group is still trying to establish itself and has some rolling stock and a small works area, in time they hope to establish a run around loop close to a popular bird sanctury on the coast.

The preservation group has just aquired a Romainian 0-8-0 tank engine and is looking for suitable passenger stock.

Cheers

Howdy Pete, welcome to this forum. You will find many excellent modelers here and if you can, we get together on Sunday night at 9PM central time (USA) for a little "session". Of course, you will probably have to get up early on Monday morning to visit, but it sure is fun. Palladin (Don) probably knows what time it happens "down under". I am not modeling a military railroad, but almost all my figures are "converted" military models. So we have something in common...

G'day, Pete

Welcome to our little patch

The Chatterbox sessions that Woodie refers to are held every Monday at 12 noon AEST.  Not really a good time if you are working.

We have several members from the land down under, working in a variety of scales

I see that shayboiler, aka John Foster has joined freerails.  I have known John for a number of years and I do hope he will send pix of his work, he builds 1:20.3 equipment which is "picker proof".  Welcome John, you will find real modelers here!

I was modelling H0n30, and turn to the big scale recently, so, I´m learnig lots of things. The firts step was buy a Spectrum OF  2-8-0, next, a Davenport and now, I am building a Henschel from La Trochita in Scratch. And have the kits for the coaches ready to sell just now.

I hope learn more things from you!!!

My english is medium so, please, keep patient!!! jeje

:wave:Lucas. Welcome to Freerails. As for your usage of English, no problem, you're doing fine. I used Google Translate to view a lot of German sites and the translation is never on target... but good enough to get the gist of what is being said.

We have a new guy named Cat Skinner. Welcome to you, if you can, try to join us for our weekly chats on flashchat Sunday night at 9 Central time. Tonight we will be talking about narrow gauge, but I don't think there is any interest around here for such stuff. Who knows, we may talk about trains! By the way, my feline buddy Peach Head isn't too keen on your name. He just hissed at me before taking a nap.

Another new member !  I'm Tony, and have been modelling On30 for perhaps a year. A second fiddle to my main interest ['OO' mid-20s to late 40s British railways], I find On30 fascinating - perhaps because there seems to be a prototype for absolutely everything !

It's a shame that market support for On30 over here is still fairly limited. R-T-R is relatively expensive too, which is why I've just ordered a Bachmann Climax from the US : a shade over £50 [including postage] as compared to at least £125 over here [without postage]. Can't wait for it to arrive - I've a Banta cab lined up waiting.

When I've got my head around posting photos, I'll set up some of my flatcar conversions. Talking of photos, I saw a K28 last week on some sight or other - I haven't slept since !!!!

Hi

My name is Tony and I live in Essex, UK. I've been modelling trains for ever it seems. I currently have a small  North American ON30 layout in a corner of the garage. I always liked narrow gauge but the 9mm track started to get a bit small for my clumsy hands so went up a size to 1/48.

Best wishes

Tony

Another "newbie" from the UK. Main interest in scenic modelling, just getting back into the hobby after nigh on 50 years (you'd better believe it!). Now retired, and looking at shortline modelling. I live in Hampshire in the UK.

Hello Dennis!

Glad to have another "old timer" join us. The folks here are a great bunch of modelers,  and some even have a sense of humor. Scales here run the gamut from N to 7/8, with a sort of a sub group of souls working in 3/8 extra narrow. Lots of narrow gauge. Grab a fizzy beverage, and enjoy the fun. Almost impossible to insult these folks- God knows, I've tried!

Cheers.

Welcome new guys-Dennis, dadandjake(cool moniker) to freerails. We're just a bunch of normal railroad fanatics. Kinda like a small town near Dallas proclaims-"home of several hundred happy people and 3 or 4 old grouches" and I may qualify for the grouch group.

If you can, join us each Sunday night at 9PM Central time (US) for the time of your life-the festival of information and tomfoolery at the line shack (flashchat). It doesn't matter what you model, you will find something educational and entertaining. Be there...or here!             Woodie

Hi all,

I',m new here, obviously, and just thought I'd take a minute and introduce myself. I just found this site today, looks great. I have everything I need to start a layout except space to put one in :), so I'm just living vicariously through site like tihis.

My interest lies mostly in transition era railroading...love them steamies. I'm in the north Jersey area and other interests include playing guitar and classic cars.

Howdy, Jep1210, and welcome!

Lots of modeling going on here, and a bunch of friendly folks. If you can, join us Sunday nights at 10 EST in FlashChat for a live BS session- some times there is a subject for discussion (which very often gets ignored), and other times, we just wing it.

Hope you can make it!

Hi@ all,

after few days reading in this forum I've now join it. I come from Germany, and my main interests are german and austrian narrow gauge models in H0e and H0m.
But I take a look at 0e/0n30 too, in last September i was "infected" during Kalles "narrow gauge modelling days" in Stromberg (there was no warning signs "biohazard", but a lot of "0e and 0n30-viruses" in the air :)) And so I'm thinking about "abusing" some bachmann stuff to build european prototypes.

regards

All that coupled with I was on a big job and time was Very limited to try and get everything figured out

Since i set Wifey up with her own computer for her business and she doesnt go online, her concerns for My online fix were less than enthusiastic :bang:

SO it was up to me and me with NO time and headed the other direction from the Puter shop

Hi folks!

I'm new to this forum as you can see.  Have been on some of the others for a while and  was updating my bit of a website and found Freerails.com while looking for new forum links.

I have more time to browse forums now and look forward to looking in on this one.

Happy new year to everyone,

Welcome Jim-where are you in Texas? If you are near Dallas, give me a call & come by to see my layout. There are many fine railroaders in the Dallas area, most of who I know well.  If you can, make it to the Plano train show on 1/17 & 1/18. There are always a lot of things to see and you just might find that old kit you have been looking for. Google search for DFW TRAIN SHOWS. And if you make it to the show, then you must visit my friend Mopman's wonderful MP layout on the tour. Good to have you on line, tell us what you're modeling.       Woodie

Hey, y'all. I'm Tom Kenyon, 49 year old living in Lilburn Ga. As briefly as possible; N-guage as a kid in the early '70s. "Grew out" of trains.  Grew back into them. HO with my son in the late '90s. Discovered narrow guage. Bought Furlow's "San Juan Central" book and built an MDC Consolidation in HOn3. Built some wooden rolling stock. Hopelessly stuck on narrow guage. Inspired by a NG&SLG article, converted an old Riverrossi 060 to On30. Now hopelessly stuck on On30. Got too busy for trains. Came back a year or so ago. Bought a Porter. Designed a mini layout. Had a quadruple bypass. Now a year and a half later, I'm back and you ain't gettin' rid of me!

Have Fun,

Welcome Tom,

Its nice to have you on board. At times we have photos or articles that can take your breath away and make the heart race, thought I should give you advance notice.

See you have been infected with the On30 bug, once struck your stuck.

Welcome Tom!

Always nice to see another member infected with the narrow gauge bug.

I too have been the victim of the dreaded double bite...HOn3 and On30.

I am collecting the Colorado style stuff in HOn3 for a layout of some sort using that one day.

We ain't getting rid of you????

Glad to hear it! :bg:  :thumb:

Have fun!

Welcome Aboard

Sounds like you have been around the scale world like most of the members. The procedures and processes are the same, just takes a while to find the right one. Hope the health issue is not a problem when you get to see the posts that are here. There are so many ideas and comments it is hard to keep up with them.

Welcome Tom-this is a great place to be. Let me invite you and Jim to our Sunday night chat. At 9PM Central US time, we get online and talk about world politics and ethics and sometimes maybe some advanced math...if it has anything to do with trains. This is a good time to actually communicate with fellow crazies in "real time" or is it unreal time? Anyway..welcome and send some photos if you have em'.

Thanks to everyone for the welcome

I was looking at some pictures, such as the 0-4-0 + 0-4-0 Garrat and broke my head!
I'm a fan of these locomotives, of which there were several models in my country, and yet, now operate two, in the planet's southernmost railway, the FERROCARRIL AUSTRAL FUEGINO (F.A.F.) of my friend Lucas was counting them.

Garrat of the F.A.F. are copies of K1 of Tasmania, but were built, first in Argentina and the second in South Africa, a few years ago.

Anyway ..

Hi Herb

I'm not good writing in English, because he missed practice.
Lived two years in Roselle Park, NJ, between 1996 and 1998, while working as a wrestler in WCW.

The brand of diapers for my babies names are also sold in Argentina, and halfway understand the meaning of "Huggies" and "little hugs" will happen?

What I fail to understand is the literary translation of "a box of hugs" .. you refer a lot of hugs?

Sorry if you upset my health.

The Argentine people are very friendly and we like to get the most friends with the people, whoever they are.

Just in case, this time, just send you greetings

Hi to all on board.
I have begun a return to this occupation after many years in the R/C car ranks. After 20 years racing in 1/8th scale 4wd gas cars around the world I have retired and settled down into this exiting hobby. During the early 80's I picked up a few HOn3 brass models and worked on a few diorama's, this kept the passion for the skills and hands on work I enjoyed alive but in the background for these many years. I am planning a On30 layout for the finished basement I have been working on the past few winters.
The layout main room will be 15' x 25' with a adjoining 12' x 12' room that will have a shelf passing thru this media room. Two other rooms (furnace and storage) will contain return loops for continuous running, and will hold the staging yards for operation. Planning a freelance coal hauler, with a main town, mine complex, mountain's with the always required spindly trestle spanning the drop into the abyss. Over the past year I have purchased a few Stoney Creek Kits and various others to begin the town element of the layout. I have a Bachman 2-8-0 as the largest locomotive on the line and will stick with Forney /Climax / Shay sized engines for the rest of the roster. DCC and Sound will be a must from the displays I have seen during the NMRA Detroit show this adds the "being there" feel to this scale.
My background contains 15 years as a Tool Maker, 5 years as a Designer, and the last 10 years as a Senior Design Engineer for the firm I work for. I am planning a company to continue on into retirement and to supply items for this ever expanding scale. First project I am designing is a turntable, with Bolt-on indexing feature based on the "Atlas" HO units and drive motor. All of the design work is done on AutoDesk " Inventor" software and as the project develops I will post images for review and comments.

LaSalle is south of Detroit Michigan. We are the Canadians that have the USA as our Northern neighbour's! This puts me in the eastern time zone and located centrally to Toronto Ca, Chicago Il, Cincinnati Oh, and Pittsburgh Pa.

Welcome! Cant wait to see what you come up with, that sounds like a really big awesome layout. :thumb:

My mom has two of those nitro RC trucks for sale in her shop, a friend of mine is into them (and RC heli's) and boy are they something else, the transmissions are so real that they break down and you have to fix them just like the real thing!

This is certainly the place to learn about RC train operation/construction/modification, should you decide to do the even darker side :asm::Crazy::)

Welcome:wave: Glad to have another 0n30'er on board.  Your layout sounds great. 1/8th scale rc eh? I dabble in 1/10th as some thing to keep the grandson busy I failed to interest him in trains  :bang: not that I have tried ,  he doesn't care for them and rc isn't the answer either. sigh...  Anyway glad to have you around the grounds!

Howdy ya'll from Tejas. As Herbie said, check out the chat on Sunday night, 9PM Central US time. Sometimes we even talk about model railroading! Send photos of your projects, the more, the better.        Woodie

Hello from the other side of the pond. I've spotted your forum from a link on All Model Railroading and thought I'd drop in to say hello. I am a confirmed rubbergauger, currently engrossed in On30 but still dabbling in other scales too.

I'm not sure how many readers you have here in Blighty but if anyone's at a loose end on Sunday (19th July) I'll be at the Telford Narrow Gauge Exhibition with my Pampas & Fernandez layout so please drop by and say hi.
