I found out about this while doing research on the Plaster City narrow gauge.
Apparently it was used to transport crews to the mine.
The double ends removed the need to turn the rail-car at each end of the line.

Looks like something Alice Cooper would own!

Yikes! FUGLY!

How many vehicles died to make that beast?

And note they used one of the left-over hood decorations on the side of the 'car'. Brand recognition.

Looks that, instead of RR wheels it just got 4 pins to keep this beast within the rails.

UGLY Definitely , but it has air conditioning!!!!!!

There are more pictures of it in the "White Gold Railroad" book. What kind of radius would it need in On30. That thing would be right at home on the Woodie central.

Thing is probably around 40' long (220" each car originally), give or take. Plan for A LOT of inside curve overhang ( note that the corner tracking pins are at the monstrosity corners).

According to the book the things on the front clip are brooms to sweep the sand from the rails. The original critter gitter for Woodies layout. This thing should have " Beast & Desert Railroad" on the side.

Wouldn't have been easier to just make it out of a regular bus body?. OTOH just imagine the raised eyebrows from your MR buddies when they see a model of it touring your layout...

That picture of a Reliant 3/30 van takes me back a bit.

I know a yellow one appeared in the BBC TV sitcom "Only Fools and Horses" - but this isn't why I remember them:

About 40 years back, someone I know had one of the car version (known as a Reliant Regal).

He didn't like the thing very much - it was cramped, unstable and very difficult to work on. Also, if he needed to get at the engine, the only access was a tiny hatch halfway up the bonnet.

I'm also not sure how rigid the GRP bodyshell was.

Saying all this, I know the things have their enthusiasts. I also know that I'm not among them.

I'm not completely sure about this, but I suspect their popularity might have something to do with some "grey areas" in the UK driver licensing laws at the time.

Regards,

Huw.

Man' that Plaster City "railcar" couldn't make my curves...unless it was a "Plastered City" railcar...maybe with an accordian section in the middle. The little blue "whatzit" that Tate showed is so ugly that it's cute.

Continuing the search for the unusual and downright screwy....Woodie

At my house you wouldn't have to. Just park it across the front yard between the front door and the mailbox.

I think that I would want my own tunnel for it to hide in. The neighbors have enough to complain about me as it is.
