In Nevada, the old Ludlow & Southern's shop crew created a most unusual "locomotive" which proves the point that there is a prototype for ANYTHING. Check this out:

The crew mounted a Holt tractor motor and transmission on the remains of old 4-6-0 #2. This photo is a little old & weathered but you can see what a shop crew can/could do with a little imagination. OK, who will build an operating model of this one? I dare you!!!

The photo was by Richard Berry from Myrick's "Railroads of Nevada Vol. 2". These books are full of cool and unusual locos and cars. Thought everyone would get a hoot about this one.

Damn she's ugly!!!
Mad Max would be very proud. It's a fine example of backyard engineering at its best. I didn't think you'd need to be dared to build one of these... I'd have thought you'd already have one already half done :)
It will be one for the ideas pile...thanks Woodie!

Cheers,

Dan, you hit it on the head. I'm a fan of the weird and ugly. It is really a beast and would look right at home on some of the other layouts I've seen and that is meant as a compliment because there is no end to there creativity. It would be something to see it modeled and even better if it ran.

My only question might be-whar does the engineer sit???!!! I imagine the whirling gears and driveshaft would make an OHSA inspector cringe not to mention the crew. It does look to be a feasible project in On?? or larger. At least you wouldn't have to worry about valve gear and other pesky bits of "detail".

I think the engineer best be walking along side the thing running the whole contraption by RC. You may be right though Woodie...those gears may have claimed a finger or two!

Charles-if it ain't a Model T part, Tillman don't want it! It would make a cool model, somebody just HAS to build one. And yes, there is only the one photo...as far as anyone knows.

Wow, that one tops them all! That even beats the 4-6-0 that had a Chevy V8 mounted in the smokebox. (You guys have seen that, haven't you?)

I definitely am adding this one to my long list of "someday" projects.
