OK...what do I "win" for being "first"? Fresh from the paint shop, ready for the "detail" shop and some weathering (or wuthering)...I present the WW2 Harley rail-motorbike.

Yep, she's a real piece of work but the crew seems to like her. Wonder how it will be to zip along the twisty track at about 60 MPH?

Who says that I don't have enough to do?

Herb !! ??

I hope you're lookin' in on this railcar (sort of) insanity ! ...

... Just to make sure there are no arguments over 'super-details' & stuff.

- - - - - - -

How many people can a Harley, mounted on a simple/lightweight speeder frame propel ?

It doesn't have to accelerate quickly.
It doesn't have to have a massive top speed.
It does need to have some equipment (junkque) space.

You know what I'm gettin' at ?
You're a bit of a knowing auto-motive type dude.
(I don't know $&!+ about this kinda tang)

What's the limiting factor ?
Wheelspin ?
What breaks first ?...
...chain ?...
...piston ?...
...etc.

I am guessing a normal road Harley could easily carry 2 people + a 3rd & side-car.
Acceleration limited; but it still goes right ?

Si.

It was a dark and stormy night when Si knocked on the door to the darkened house. The rain, which it seemed had been coming down forever, ran down the back of Si's neck, and he cursed silently. Again he knocked, louder this time, and was gratified to see a dim light approaching through the window beside the door. Finally the door opened, and a grizzled old man looked at him for what seemed like minutes before he spoke. Wadda ya want--and who the blazes are ya? Si was slightly overcome by the warmth of the greeting and managed to stammer I'm looking for Herb- I have an important question to ask him. He stood there with the cold rain still trickling down his back awaiting an answer, which eventually came. You still haven't said who you are, and I'm not holding this door open all night waiting-- he gruffly said. A--ah--I'm Si from FreeRails, sir, and it's bloody cold and wet out here--do you think that I might come in? Once again the eyes glared at him--you aint here about them Herb-O-Rivitt things I hope! No Sir, Si meekly replied--I have a question, and I have heard that you are one of the few that can answer it. Might as well come in, was the reply, you've screwed up my evening already. The old fart led the way through the darkness to a library and turned in the single bare bulb hanging from the ceiling in the middle of the room. Alright d**n it, what's the question? Si proceeded to tell the old man, who slowly seemed to take more interest.

Well,  he said as he put on a dirty shop coat and spectacles, and walked over to the bookcase. He stopped, as if looking for a particular volume and Si thought that it must be wonderful to have reference material like that at hand. He reached up and with his arms spread, clasped what looked to be nearly a dozen thick volumes as if he were playing an accordion. Si cringed, fearing that the whole stack would crash to the floor as soon as they cleared the support of the shelf, but to his amazement the spines of the books seemed to all be one piece, with nothing where the interior pages should be. Herb carefully set the ersatz "books" on a table, and then looked at Si. Can't be too careful Si, he said, used to be able to leave this stuff out in plain sight, but since Woodie became an Admininstrator, have to hide it. He carefully lifted a bottle that the books had hidden, and also two large glasses which were carefully placed on the table. Herb started to set the bottle down next to them, but then thought better of it and caressed it lovingly for several moments. After a few moments time he poured out a very small quanity for Si in one glass while half filling his own. Motioning to Si to sit, he pulled out a chair for himself and eased himself into it. A large brown dog came out of the darkness, and went to Herb and nudged his leg several times. Lay down Grommit, Herb said harshly--since I took his c-gars away, he wants booze anytime that he smells it.

Well, he said for the second time. Harley WLA huh?  In '29 Harley made their first 45 inch motor. Called it the R. Indian riders called it the "three cylinder" Harley, because the generator stuck almost straight up beside the front cylinder. Dang stupid lookin thing.  Then before the war--Archie Bunker's war that is-- the factory redesigned the engine and it was called the L model. Wouldn't pull toilet paper off the roll, so they did some stuff that raised the horsepower to a whopping 22 and that became the WL model. Along comes the war and they started making 'em for the army, and that was the WLA. Real clever, huh? A for army. Bunch of geniuses there in Milwaukee. He stopped for a moment, turned his glass between his fingers , obviously deep in thought, and said--You don't think that I'm going to keep writing this drivel all night do you Si?

I would say that on the level, perhaps 7 or 8, with the limiting thing being how much traction that the wheel (s) could get. If the rear cycle brake was the only means of stopping, don't expect much in the way of slowing down quickly. Probably would have to be geared down to pull the load, and the slower airspeed would cause engine overheating in the Summer, without an auxiliary fan. First thing to break in the motors were the pistons, when wear on the bores became excessive. Rest of the bike was reasonably reliable, but gutless.

OK Si. Let Gromitt finish your drink and git out of here---what---Ain't my fault it's raining, boy--GIT!

It has been a very productive first posting: first a nice model, the some fine writing (and some klingon thrown in for good measure!). Jose.

"I picked a fine time to quit drinkin'" - Lloyd Bridges in AIRPORT

Great movie - 5 Mooses !

Fantastic step-by-step BTW Woodie !

First-Step photo :- Harley kit in box & Grant speeder-wheels.

Last-Step photo :- Model FINISHED !

What happened to the Middle-Step photo...

...the empty bottle of Jack Daniels ?

Not enough waxing on about applying 'super details' IMO.

- - - - - - -

Herb, Thanks !

I was kinda wondering if a speeder-trailer, was credible.

Brakes, not a problem...

..." We don't need no stinkin' brakes "

7-8 peoples = trailer, kinda credible; right ?

- - - - - - -

Cheers

Si.

Now B-Off ! & leave Grommit & Herbnoxious to their evening ceeeegar...
