The Mt Washington is a rack railway. The loco has gears and so does the coach. There is a safety appliance that keeps it all from slipping down the grade. That appears to be the actual gradient-steep as hell!

And here they show how it was done in the old days before transfer tables came into use.

BTW Like to see they employ good old European style coaches - long wheelbase, two axles - no way to conceal bad tracklaying!
