Somebody came in the middle of the night and took my rail:

Not sure what you'd call this pair of round-faced cutters, but all I had to do was squeeze the rail and give the cutters a slight roll to pop the rail up out of the grooves in the ties.  Has to be done at each tie, but there's hardly any mess.  The rail with the grooves in the ties is Gargraves.  The Ross track and switches have spikes at each tie, I had to pry one end up and once I could slide a tongue depressor under it I could move the tongue depressor along the track and lift the center rail up.  Had to follow that with a pair of small needle-nosed pliers to get all the spikes.

Not without a lot of expense Phil, which what I'm trying to avoid by re-utilizing the 3-rail track.

I couldn't find any 2-rail track with enough height to keep the Hi-rail wheels. I was worried about keeping the 054 (27" rad) curves in the engine/TT area and the sidings but, believe it or not, the engines seem to be handling going thru the turnouts better now that the middle rail is gone.

More testing/running is required ;)

This may prompt me to finish ballasting the track, if nothing else than to cover the bare spots left by removing the middle rail :moose:

I concur, removing the third rail really makes the track look better. Even if the rail is still a bit oversized, at least in the photos, it doesn't look bad at all. A little weathering of the ties and you're golden!

Well done Bob !!!

Even without some ballasting the layout already looks much better. There is no getting away from the fact that a centre third rail is not present on the majority of railways we model. It is a toy market hangover from having to cater for uninsulated wheels of clockwork and live steam items on an electrified track more than century ago.

What you are doing is leading the way in the USA in removing such an anachronism at little expense or disruption. Hopefully you will inspire others. I have seen a few layouts in real life, in books and displayed on the web that were well made scenically with fine rolling stock but totally spoiled by the presence of the 3rd rail.

I seriously considered this option about 10 years ago. I would have saved a lot of money. :>(

Bob,

I have ZERO artistic ability. When I was a draftsman, I used all the tools available, no freehand. One of my co-workers said "Man, you couldn't even draw flies (my drawing must have really stunk if flies wouldn't even be attracted to the smell)!"

But, can't do it if ya don't try (no wonder I never win the lottery)

I've posted this on the OGR forum and a few are interested, at least reading about it.
