Well, I appreciate all the input.
I am open to any suggestions to a smaller more manageable island style layout that would still give a lot of operating fun? Anyone have any links?
EDIT:
Im really not opposed to switching to On30... Models twice as big offer a lot more room for detail, plus I wont go crosseyes from scratch building things... plus I really enjoy the goofy looks of the locos, big cabs with tiny boilers. Not to mention it would make dead rail much more possible, if I wanted to go that route... hmmm
EDIT #2
On30 would also be much more 3D printer friendly...
EDIT #3
Maybe Daves On30 4x8?

Hi Sean.
I didn't wanna say it, but now Dan has...
...I think the first plan is gonna be heartache as well.
Looks good on paper...
...but try & make it, & ................
The above plan looks much better to me.
If you like the idea of 'splitting' the 8x4 down the middle...
...with mountain, backscene, buildings etc.
Then 1 destination on each side, could give you some pretty good ops.
& 2 different scenic treatments.
All the best.
Cheers.
Si.

Thanks for the support guys. Im thinking switching to On30 might be the way to go...
Does anyone else have any 4x8 On30 layouts?
Dave's layout is designed to be the desert and an ore mine, but If I were to do It Id still want to do make it the pacific northwest and maybe a coal mine.
Id prefer a logging layout tho... Maybe Ill reach out to Dave to see if he could throw something together for me?
EDIT: Ill make a new thread in the On30 sectionLast edited on Sun Jan 17th, 2016 07:54 pm by Sean W

Hi Sean,
If you consider the Rimfire and Latigo plan as it stands,
then:
- If you build the modules as four 4' by 2' modules that run vertically on the plan, no major structures like the turntable or turnouts are on the module joints.
- If you go to HO Scale, you can get in more structures (and trees for a Pacific Northwest feel) because HO floorplans only take up 1/4 the area of O scale structures.
- If the mine stays where it is then it is reasonably easy to change from a metalliferous mine to a coal mine
- As a sweeping generalisation , philosophically, you may have to go to an operating plan where you run shorter trains far more often. This can be quite a mind-shift for some North American modellers who seem to be fixated on multiple locomotives up front and long trains. This seems to be less of a problem for UK/European prototype modellers where shorter length passing sidings on the prototype have limited the length of trains.
- Caution when modelling trees - a 300' high redwood in any scale is a very BIG tree. You may have to use some modeller's license to justify smaller trees (like poor soil, rain-shadow area, already been logged etc). If you want to go for the "tall timber" then perhaps a "Red Stag Lumber" http://www.modvid.com.au/html/body_red_stag_on3.html approach hight work, where only the trunks and lower foliage are modelled and the upper foliage is lost in the pelmet over the layout.
Over to you,

That R&L is a nice plan.
Thing to remember when comparing required space for On30 and HO is that while they are about the same in length, a hair more in width, the 'vertical clearance required in real life on the layout' dimension is much greater in On30 than in HO.
