I think I've pinned this down to a car built by ACF:

Anyone know if these cars had any kind of designation to them (such as AAR 1937 or ARA 1939, or PS1)?

Everything I've found (which was not much) just says this was a 40' sliding door boxcar.

WIF&SSCo operated railroad car ferries between Florida and Havana until the revolution in Cuba when they ceased operation.

I have some decals for this car made by Proto-Craft and I think I've found an Atlas Trainman boxcar that works:

So, does the Atlas model appear to be the same as the real deal?

If it isn't the same, I can't tell it. Excellent looking to me.

Thanks Ken!

I think the SAL silver car would be a good candidate...if I see one more silver SAL car I'm gonna scream :bang:

It's like that's all the makers can do, copy one another on a car that only a few were painted in that scheme.  I'll be more than glad to strip a silver car down and paint it brown :thumb:

The angled/beveled edges on the side sill need to be angled more, but that's easy fixins compared to some of the alterations I've done.

Look forward to seeing the repaint. The ship outline sign should be an interesting project in itself.

Bob,

Not soon after posting this I kept searching and found that both Atlas and Lionel made a painted/decaled WIF car.  I can't find the Atlas car (special issue) but the Lionel car seems plentiful and for a few dollars more than the silver Trainman car would cost I can have one already up and running:

Not sure which way I'll go at this point.

Wow...I'd get the nice Lionel car and weather it a bit, and get that silver car repainted and decal it also. Have 2 of these beauties. Very interesting!

Woodie, I agree. The only thing I can see out of place is the tack board on the door and that should be easy to fix.

I've got 2 SAL and ACL cars painted in the silver scheme, I think they used them to move beer [toast]

The Lionel car looks better than the Atlas Trainman, for one thing it has separate hand grabs vice molded on. Plus I think all new Lionel cars now have Kadee mounting pads.

While the Atlas car is PRR prototype and the Lionel is a Pullman prototype PS1 car the WFI car is an ACF car. IMO the Lionel is closer looking for the ends. Side sill could be filed for a closer looking car. Are there any O scale ACF
box cars models out there? How close would the old Athearn
metal kits be? If it were me, I'd use the Lionel and put scale trucks under it and let the rivet counters pound sand.

I wish I had seen this 2 weeks ago...I just assembled an old All-Nation kit and it may be closer to the prototype than either Atlas or Lionel.

Might have to check to see if the guy I got it form has more (he also has some Athearn kits) :!:
