I bet a lot of people find this Forum via a Google search,
come in and look around.

I have done that for other forums.

I'll go take a look but rarely ever join a Forum,
unless I think I'll post there enough to make it worth my while.

My standards are pretty high, and I don't join one,
unless I'm pretty sure I want to hang around.

Thanks Eddie.

You'd make a great rivet-counter ...

... You could do a Union Pacific Big-Boy if you can count to 416,727  ;)

It's been noticed that there are a LARGE number of interesting Topics ...

... that are essentially sitting in the 'General Talk - Off Topic' Forum & often get 'buried in history'.

So I've decided to dig up some of these dusty ol' 'General' Topics ...

... & 'Move' them to somewhere more suitable.

For example...

...'Does Anyone Remember Cardstock Structures' has turned into quite a long & interesting Thread.

It has been 'Moved' to the 'Kitbuilding' Forum.

This is pretty much mainly only going to affect Threads that got started in the 'General' Forum.

The 'General' Forum is often where some of the Sites most interesting or unusual Threads get started.

Some get a few Posts, others get a few PAGES and THOUSANDS of views !

I hope this might help current & future Members & Guests ...

... find even more COOL stuff to look at on Freerails, more easily.

I only look at stuff that draws my interest and rarely comment on it.

So...we need to step it up and get more folks to post :old dude:

At least folks here post about what they're doing,
one of the other forums I visit seem to concentrate on what the other forums are doing,
or on stuff that's no longer made, like they're "collectors of the obscure",
or post stuff that's so far off the wall, you wonder what they've been smoking.  [whack]

I think more folks would participate in the RC forum, if we had a "RC for Dummies" tutorial.
Some of the talk is so convoluted, that it's hard to grasp what is being said, unless you are an EE.

Howdy Bob, I was the one who made the "honchos" start the r/c forum long ago.
I kept griping and jabbering until the listowner created the forum to get me away other forums!
When I began the subject, I posted what I was familiar with, r/c car equipment in locomotives.

After these many years, that is what I still use (I can't or won't afford the new stuff.),
if it ain't broke, don't f@#k with it!

I appreciate the response it has brought and though I am still the moderator,
I feel that I have been "left behind" by the new devotees.
Oh well, that's the fate of us old dinosaurs.

Try reading the original post about r/c
http://freerails.com/view_topic.php?id=1221&forum_id=45
which began.."In the beginning,..."

Just let the kids talk about their toys, I am still running my old lokies, just like usual.

Hi Bob

There is no doubt that it is the Members & their Posts, which make Freerails what it is.

The fact that there are over 1/2 a Million page-views a month ...

... is a testament to the 'quality' archive of material, Posted by our Members.

The more of course, the merrier !

There is a slight tendency in most Forums, for Posting to drop off a bit in the spring/summer months.

Gardening (my bugbear !), holidays, family stuff, can mean a bit less modeling.

The upturn in Posting between say September & May is consistently noticed.

Having said that, I personally enjoy Posting whatever the season may be.

Freerails has propelled my modeling forwards, like nothing else.

I like sharing my own crazy constructions & step by steps etc. ...

... which is exactly what I like to see & is often not catered for in magazines etc.

Some Members do drift in and out of Posting, as their 'life situation' changes.

I very much miss Michael (salada), as I'm sure many of you do as well.

His 'life situation' has meant a step back, from his regular & entertaining Posts of the past.

Whilst on some Forums, someone 'blinks' and you get 10 'attaboys'...

... Freerails, thank goodness perhaps, isn't total 'attaboy central' ...

... but the Page-views say it all, in terms of the 'quality' content on Freerails.

So I would agree with Bob.

Don't THINK about Posting a comment, a photo, a model, or an idea ... POST IT !

Some of the unusual stuff that goes up, is often the most commented on ...

... and sometimes the most viewed.

Of course, to the regular photo, model & layout Posters ...

... keep it coming !

If you don't get 10 'attaboys' for blinking, just check the Thread views.

Many people including TONS of non-Members are following your diverse stories each time you Post.

Freerails may get even more views and new guys due to the BS surrounding photobucket.
Since I won't search for other "photo hosts", my days of posting anywhere but here are over!
But then, what do I know...I'm just an old dude who lives in a cave (searching for a new cave).

I was keen to get the stats up quickly this month

Ive been working on my new system for this years trip to Vegas

I am almost certain I cant go wrong this time !

Figured out that February is a bit of an odd month

10% less days than some other months

Page views for the last few years

357,132   February   2015

382,708   February   2016

416,727   February   2017

476,410   February   2018

Less page views than last months 527,397

But if there had been 31 days it would have been 527,454

Thats in fact as it turns out 57 more page views than last month

They havent got a chance against me in Vegas this year

This guy aint coming off the rails there this time youll see

My new system is even better than smart $$$ outside flanges !

I know how everyone is just itching with excitement every month to read my stats. post

They tell me that August can be a quiet month for model railroading nutz

Holiday time and lots of tedious yard work is thought to be the theory

Well here at Freerails we PROVE theories one way or another

Page views for the last few Augusts

495,708   August   2015

418,974   August   2016

567,491   August   2017

574,688   August   2018

Im not sure that those figure prove or disprove anything at all

I certainly wouldnt put my dough on any crackpot calculations like that in Vegas !

Talking of dough and crackpot calculations

I know you were all wishing me Lady Luck out in Vegas this summer

Ive nearly got my perfect system all worked out at last

This year will be much better for sure

It couldn't be much worse

383,008   September   2015     ( August   495,708 )

485,287   September   2016     ( August   418,974 )

507,330   September   2017     ( August   567,491 )

471,271   September   2018     ( August   574,688 )

Septembers Page views for the last few years

Unusually the first time there has been a dip in the stats. since Ive been Posting them I think

Perhaps September is in fact the busy yard work month after all and not August

Sometimes theres just no sense in the numbers

Thats what I keep telling myself in Vegas anyway

Keep it between the ditches

Im a bit behind with the ever growing monthly stats. figures as usual

So expect Decembers stats. sometime later in March !

But Freerails is still continuing to set new records all the time !

Beating the previously recorded numbers by a considerable amount

A new Freerails record was set yesterday

I'm not surprised we keep breaking records.

With the diversity of scales, countries, types of modeling and all the ancillary subjects thrown into the forum.
There is a wealth of knowledge, experience and very helpful members, willing to share their skills and knowledge.

This is a great forum and it can only grow stronger due to informative and helpful nature of its members and administrators.

What can one say...... Well done....

Thank you very much indeed Peter for your kind words

No one has ever called me informative and helpful before

Although I do my best to try to be

I have a memory like an elephant kinda all wrinkly and grey so I wont forget that

I just added a gold star next to your name on my list of potential trouble makers

Just to make sure I dont forget

I hope that information was helpful and informative

I don't give praise often but I think praise should be given when it's due,
and this forum has great members and a diversity of topics that should satisfy any modeler.

It's nice to see how the forum is growing.

I think it shows there is still a strong interest in model trains world wide,
but I think in Australia it's on the decline.

Once again well done to the administrators and the members.

Decembers stats. from the crumpled printout I found on the office floor

Total number of page views in December for the last few years

370,344    December    2015

481,871    December    2016

684,229    December    2017

794,506    December    2018

I wish my bank account would manage a doubling of figures over 3 years !

Maybe the huge number of hours work put into administrating Freerails each week is worth it ?

A few people seem to think so

Ill bear in mind that you have given license to Nasty Guy Eddie as well

January 2019 was an absolutely totally fantastic month stats. wise for Freerails

But a very difficult one for other reasons as well

By the end of January 2019 we had the highest number of page views in a month EVER

It was thought that Freerails would reach  1,000,000  MILLION  page views by the end of January

But with this massively increased traffic & usage came the unforeseen problem of bandwidth

The more folks that are clicking & looking the more bandwidth Freerails needs to have

On 3 occasions during January 2019 Freerails tripped the Sites bandwidth overload-switch

This resulted in the Site being off-air for 3 periods of about  12  &  6  &  6  hours each

Users may or may not have noticed these off-air periods depending on when they logged in

But the 3 off-air periods totaled 1 whole day between them whilst the overload was dealt with

443,108    January    2017

As you can see Freerails didnt quite make the cool MILLION mark in January 2019

But the Site was off-air for 24 hours during the course of the month due to the bandwidth issues

Had Freerails been on-air 24/7 as per usual could the Site have made the magic  1,000,000  MILLION ?

Who knows

I discovered the stats I filed for April again at last

Along with the cute chocolate Easter Bunny the ex Mrs. sent me

Or rather what was left of it

The Long Beach heatwave had melted the sweet critter in the filing cabinet

The stats were OK after a bit of restoration

Bunnys in the dog house though

An incredible amount of work in the past few months of Admin.

So I am still a bit behind on the forum stats. as usual

In trying to look back a page to see July last year

I realized that I had jumped straight from June 2018 to August 2018

So I tagged on a few extra years here back to 2013 as well

Stats. wise July is probably one of the most random months of the year

Holidays and yard work etc. dont produce the peak numbers as winter does

But still good numbers as I guess a few Freerails fans dont play Golf

A 50% rise in just 2 years is a much better result than my last Vegas trip

Of course none of that applies to our Aussie friends down under

As they get their 6' of snow in the summer

And Santa Claus wears shorts and shades and delivers on a quad bike

I think he has one of those hats with the corks on strings as well

In red and white of course

Total page views for July over the last few years

" Hi Eddie
Good to see more page views and new members in the last month or so.
Your reference to Aussie Father Christmas could be like the guy in the link below.
Happy Christmas
Peter "

G'day Peter

Thanks for your message and supportive comments as usual

More page views and new members can only mean one thing

A bigger and brighter and better and bouncier Freerails

I followed your link and ended up on a beach in a downunder Christmas !

It looks just like California over there !

Time for some surfing with your mates after all the presents are delivered

I am told that August can be a quiet month for model railroading nutz

A lot of holiday time and tedious yard work is the theory

Page views for the last few Augusts

418,974   August   2016

567,491   August   2017

574,688   August   2018

703,553   August   2019

I am not sure those figure prove or disprove anything

Easier to figure out than card odds though

Eddie,

I always like looking at the numbers you post.

Seems like this August many were not tending to yard work and such.

Always surprised at the number of visitors we get on this site.

Thanks for posting the information.

I think it will be interesting to see the stats. for the last period,

I would imagine a large increase in visits,
but I was wrong once before.

The above stats. are quoted from Post No.62 on Page 7

When I Posted the stats. above, back in  Post No.62 on Page 7

I honestly didn't think it was ever going to be possible to beat that number online

Well I was wrong !

As some of you may have noticed from the stats. shown on the Freerails Home Page

The previous greatest number of users online  EVER  !  was beaten in October !

'The most users ever online was 1244 on Fri Oct 30th, 2020'

As you might expect from such large numbers of users online

They ramp up the number of Page Views, as they are looking at all your great Pages !

So in October the previous record for the number of Page Views, was NEARLY beaten

But in the month of November just gone, the number of Page Views record WAS BROKEN !

932,737     October       2020

975,276     November    2020

The previous record number of Page Views in a month was  934,736  in January 2019

January 2019  was an absolutely totally fantastic month stats. wise for Freerails

But the Site was off-air for 24 hours during the course of the month due to the bandwidth issues

Traffic from folks viewing Freerails Pages has never ever been busier !

I don't think I've EVER peeked at the stats. before that month is over before.

But out of curiosity I did today, not even 9 full days into the month yet.

If you Google a topic, say "What Is Gn15 Scale" by David, you'll often find something linked to Freerails.

It seems there are a lot of people out there searching for topics on model railroading.

The wealth of information that is available here makes it hard for any modeler to pass up.

I'd like to see more visitors converted into Members.

" I'd like to see more visitors converted into Members "

Hi Michael

In answer to your ^^ wish, I can say with confidence ...

... that a great many visitors ARE converted into Members.

I have been creating & sending out New Memberships ...

... since 11th December 2016, for exactly 4 years TODAY !

In those 4 years, I have created & sent out 439 New Memberships ...

... just under 100 New Memberships requested this year alone.

They are all requests by folk, that have sent 'real' eMails to Freerails ...

... many including detailed modeling histories, photos & even CVs !

I am honored to receive these 'real' requests, from 'real' people ...

... these are not just some superficial 'thumbs-up' Facebook garbage.

I could say more on Membership, following my 4 years experience ...

... but I'm sure much of what I'd say, is perhaps fairly obvious.

Going by the stats. from Nice Guy Eddie

34,853 per day... Multiply by 31 days =

YEAH...... We can do it.

Nice to have a bit of fun and if we don't get to the million,

does it really matter?

From time to time I will hear someone talking,
about how the hobby is slowly dying out.

I think our stats. show that there is still an interest,
a growing interest, in model railroading.

I've recently read several stories,
about someone that was into trains when they were a teenager,
but how life got in the way (college, career, family).

But once things have settled down,
they find an urge to get back into modeling again.

Nope, it doesn't at all,
but it is really nice to know we have content that is good.

People keep coming back, even if they don't join.

I saw the other day that we have something like 1500 members
(er 'scuse me 1399 after looking again) ?!

You know that is not one million (I see Dr. Evil here) individuals,
or even 1500 of us looking 666 times a day,
but returning visits from outside.

That is really nice to know we attract people to come back.
There really is a lot of good stuff here.

I enjoy looking at everyone's ideas and work.
Keep posting y'all.

" In Aussie dollars "

Hi Peter

We can't pay salaries in Aus.$ or even USD$ for that matter.

We are using a VERY little known crypto-currency, called  THE WOMBAT !

I'd authorize an initial payment to you of 100 WOMBATS

Let me know if that's OK ? and I'll send them straight away !

(you have to feed them & let them in to watch TV with you BTW)

That sounds great, 100 Wombats,

I go into other modeling sites and will often suggest,
that someone looks at Freerails for help or suggestions on how to do something.

For example yesterday someone was asking about battery power,
and I sent him here for the information he needed.

March has thirty one days,
so that makes up for the missing day in February.

Well almost.

If we wait any longer for the figures it will be April,
then Eddie will have to do figures for two months.

There's a hint in there Eddie.

Good figures considering the weather.

If all our 1408 members visit :!:

8.767045454545455 times extra a month,

we should get the magic million.

As I have mentioned before, it doesn't matter,

just enjoy what we are modelling and have fun doing it,

I am.

" just enjoy what we are modelling and have fun doing it "

Hi Peter

I couldn't agree with you more on that one.

The stats. however, are an indication that we are doing something right.

Other than the stats. we just have occasional vague opinions to go on.

Apart from a very slight dip in the February curve for 2020.

We have seen a consistent growth, which for me is a motivating factor !

If February had 30 or 31 days, we would have hit the 1,000,000 for sure.

But December & January have always been tops for Freerails page views.

Total page views for February over the last few years

323,923   February   2014

357,132   February   2015

382,708   February   2016

416,727   February   2017

476,410   February   2018

749,547   February   2019

629,527   February   2020

987,656   February   2021

Page views total for March 2021

1,124,670

Didn't quite beat Freerails record month of December 2020

But March was the 2nd largest number of Page views EVER !

Keep up the excellent Posting

Folks out there are watching !

I'm always surprised by the number of Guests we have looking at our Site.

If we all Post more maybe we'll get more views.

A valid comment Michael, not sure of the stats.
More Postings can only increase the views and increase interest in Topics.
Maybe Nice Guy Eddie can shed some light on the stats.

It is always good to see our busy Members, Posting on their railroading.

It is also true to say, that requires a bit more effort, than just viewing.

However, that extra effort required, may ensure 'quality' not 'quantity'.

It's currently impossible, to find uninteresting Postings up on Freerails.

Also apparent was, in the past, Freerails may have been a bit 'pigeonholed'.

One Member even said they thought Freerails was just for US narrow gauge !

Obvious of course, they weren't rocketing up the Freerails Site Page views ! !

Freerails is diverse, in its international 'World Wide' interested Membership.

Another stat. worth taking a look at, to assess the Site, is the numbers online.

Members can see this stat. at the very bottom of the 'Home' & 'Recent' Pages.

They can also see the 'Most Users Ever Online', which currently stands at 1,244

March's stat. was 1,207 and why Freerails 'Web Bandwidth' had to be increased.

I simply had to have a little peek at this months 15 day stat.

A very nerve wracking task indeed !

594,369

If this Freerails Page Views figure doubles in Aprils next 15 days

April will become our NEW biggest month EVER !

An odd stat. spotted recently.

Freerails GREATEST number of 'Page Views' in a month is

1,172,801

Which was recorded in December 2020

Maximum 'Users Online' at the same time however was only

391

Which was in fact the LOWEST number of any month in 2020

The GREATEST 'Users Online' at the same time during 2020 was

1,244

In October of that year & another Freerails GREATEST number ever

Hi Peter

Those last oDd Stats. were presented more as an 'anomaly'

So it is difficult to read anything meaningful into them at all !

They stood out in the Stats. figures, so I thought it was interesting.

'Largest number of Page Views  Vs.  Smallest max No. of users online'

It's a bit like the Stock Market & the 'Bottom Line' share-price I guess.

Nothing really means anything ultimately, other than that 1 price figure.

As I found out watching entertaining movie 'The Wolf Of Wall Street'

Sometimes Stock Brokers aren't exactly very honest & decent people !

:f:

Anyway

We didn't quite DOUBLE the 1/2 way month figure of  594,369  Page Views

But we NEARLY did !

Ending up with a final total number of Page Views for all of April 2021 of

1,132,060

Which is the SECOND HIGHEST number of Page Views on Freerails EVER !

Other than the RECORD of  1,172,801  Page Views from December 2020

In the month of April 2016 the total number of Page Views was  431,155
