I am wondering if the couplers of Bachmann and Hornby are compatible,

as I am looking at several cheap OO Ebay auctions based in the USA.

Hi Kyle

The simple answer is YES ! ... ( probably ! )  :P

The couplers used on current 'Bachmann' Branchline OO trains, are a compact version of what is known as the 'Closed Loop Coupler'.  L:

The original & somewhat larger in appearance, 'Closed Loop Coupler' was first used on 'Tri-ang' OO/HO trains, way back in the swingin' '60s !

It was also used on 'Tri-ang Hornby' OO trains of the '70s era.

They continued to be used on '80s era 'Hornby' OO trains as well.

These days, I believe 'Hornby' also fit a 'Compact Closed loop Coupler', which is essentially the same as the 'Bachmann' ones.

The vintage & modern (large & compact) 'Closed Loop Couplers' should all couple to each other, provided the height of the 'loop' is correct.  :)

The 'Closed Loop Coupler' was an improvement on an even earlier 'Tri-ang' coupler, known as the 'Open Loop Coupler'.  L:

The 'Open Loop Coupler' was kinda OK, but the 'Closed Loop Coupler' was a great improvement on it.

The very early 'Open Loop Couplers' can couple to the later 'Closed Loop Coupler', but are sometimes troublesome !

I doubt you will want to buy OO trains with 'Open Loop Couplers' unless you are a 'collector', the wheel-flanges are a bit BIG !

Mmm ...

Makes sense ?
