Hey y'all.
Picked up again last week with a long term project,
of modifying some Bachmann HO scale USRA 0-6-0 to my tastes.
Went well, until ...
I drilled 16 holes in all the wrong places,
while adding mechanical control rods for the fore and aft sand domes.
Drilled 8 holes of .020 above a dome fitting I should have drilled in to.
Drilled 8 holes in cab front inboard of generator, when they should have been outboard.
Oh well, such is life.
And it isn't like I wasn't looking at reference images.
Such as ...
Shorpy Historical Picture Archive :: Iron Horse: 1923 high-resolution photo
Grrr. Fortunately styrene is easy to patch,
and there was .020 Evergreen styrene rod on hand.
Speaking of references, have been playing on the internet every day for a week,
and have yet to find not just a good photo but ANY photo of a USRA 0-6-0 cab interior.
Eventually I want to add crew figures, firedoor, throttle, et cetera, to the models.
A major part of the project,
is adding Kadee #590 electrical pickup trucks to the tiny little tenders ...
https://www.kadee.com/ho-scale-trucks-and-wheels-c-274_277_292/590-ho-scale-bettendorf-aar-electrical-pickup-self-centering-caboose-trucks-with-33-smooth-back-wheels-hgc-p-886.htm
As part of that job I'm lowering the ride height of the tenders,
I think they may sit high from talgo coupler origins.
And that required rebuilding the tender's coupler mount.
Am also shortening the drawbars by about 1/4 inch.
The other major component is building new front frame ends with a working coupler.
I can't believe Bachmann has made these 0-6-0 for this many decades,
and not yet given these switchers a working front coupler at the factory.
And that's about all the model RR news from here.

Thanks !
One wasn't in the photo, the PRR,
it is the only DCC one of the herd.
The one with red oxide,
is for a freelance roadname.
The one with just the boiler jacketing painted on white plastic,
is for a freelance roadname.
The one that's all black plastic, is the SP one in top photo,
it will be getting painted with a light olive boiler jacket.
Oh no! about the track.
Hey, we can invent a saying
"Railroading, like football, is a game of inches."

My dream, or goal, is to add a few more, done up for ...
ACL, B&O, C&O, RI, MKT, and my third freelance roadname.
Am also pondering lengthening the SP one's tender.
Want to paint the B&O one with a non-black boiler jacket like this real 0-6-0 in 1953,
though it is of a different and pre-USRA class

I often have noticed Bachmann tenders on sale for ~ 20 at Trainworld NY,
sometimes medium sized Vandys.
Do these tender trucks pick up current from both rails ?
Looks good, even more as it has leaf springs.
A front coupler is most essential,
except for the rare fully streamlined loco with closed coupler doors.
Look forward to see more pics. from you !

Out of the box, the tender picks up nothing from anywhere.
The Kadee trucks I added each pickup from one rail,
via the visible bronze/copper contact wipers.
On each axle one wheel is insulated from the axle, one is not.
The trucks are not sprung like Kadee's freight car trucks,
but do have a special split bolster design which allows them to flex a bit.
Kadee's 590 trucks come with the contact wipers below the axles as shown,
but a couple derailments showed it would be smart to move wipers to above the axles,
so they don't get bent by catching on switch rails and such.
Yes, though designed as caboose trucks,
they are suitable for small tenders like these & the leaf spring detail looks right.
That being said, there are plenty of images out there of 0-6-0s,
with tenders having the regular freight car style coil spring trucks.
And I've even found images of tenders with one leaf spring and one coil spring truck.
Here's one on B&O with coil spring tender trucks ...

One of the USRA style like these models, with coil spring tender trucks ...
http://www.northeast.railfan.net/images/bo1150s.jpg
At the moment I can't find online but one photo of 0-6-0 with different trucks under tender.
Somewhere I do have a copy of a photo of someone's 0-6-0 in-service,
where tender has a leaf spring truck forward and coil spring truck aft.
Here's a UP the other way 'round, coil spring truck forward & leaf spring truck aft ...
http://www.northeast.railfan.net/images/tr_up4442.jpg
Also note that its boiler jacketing extends over smokebox.

Hey wow, documentable progress has happened !
At some point between February and maybe June,
U.P. 4439's roof hatches got drilled and carved open.
Then it was wait until my defective body was good,
for making hatches and supports for center hatch.
Yesterday and last night was the time.
Given that U.P.s actual 0-6-0 numbered 4439 was not a U.S.R.A. style,
like what Bachmann printed the number on,
rivet-counting accuracy is a non-starter on this project.
So, "To my tastes" is indeed the theme here.
Now, the actual 4439 was of some significance,
so there will be a bit about that after the model photos.
Painting: cab roof and tender top have been given some weathering.
Cab interior is primed white prior to application of a light green.

During the early portion of its career, #4439 worked as a "goat",
in the U.P. switch yard in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Later #4439 served on the Los Angeles Harbor Belt line,
until her operation ended at the order of the Air Pollution Control Board in 1957.
U.P. #4439 was the last steam locomotive to have operated,
in both the Harbor and the greater Los Angeles areas.
