Hi all

I have an older brass HOn3 #491 2-8-2

HOn3 is just too small for me these days.
I am planning on selling it to a good home, but...

I cannot find any manufacturer description on it.
I thought it was marked "Japan" and is for sure tender driven.

When I bought it, it came in a 'Tenshodo' box,
but I think it was just put in a box that was handy ?

This model looks like it was painted for a fictional road "Rio Diablo".
Beautiful but a little worn paint.

The doghouse looks different than others I have seen,
with 'Wood sheathing', and roof handrails.  Has full coal load.

I did get a LHS to repair a short,
so the engine runs.

Help on identifying the manufacturer and age ?

My best guess is a PFM.

Found a loco that is very close,
but apparently has been converted to a can motor in the firebox.

https://www.trainmaster.ch/ZX-857.htm

Pilot and trailing truck are also PFM style,
however I didn't find one with both trucks matching yours.

Apparently this changed over the years.

This is the closest I found.

https://brasstrains.com/Classic/Product/Detail/102441/HOn3-Brass-Model-DP-30491-D-RGW-Rio-Grande-K-37-2-8-2-Black-Boiler-491-F-P-2019-Run-Boo-Rim-NEW-MODEL-

Yours could probably be an early run.

I searched by typing Samhongsa K-37 HOn3

WOW ! ... Only $2,370 ... But it's SOLD already.  :f:

Oh well ... I just 'acquired' a 'West Coast' modular-synthesizer ...

... & I'm told I shouldn't forget about important things, like FOOD ! (& coffee !)  :java: :P

It seems to me the tender trucks/sideframes ^^ are the wrong ones for a Narrow Gauge loco.  ???

It's difficult to be 100% certain, but they look like plastic, with HO Standard Gauge spacing.  L:

Tender 8-wheel electrical pickup, has been (retro ?) fitted, with 'single wheel' axle insulation ?  :!:

My observation about this No.491 tender trucks/sideframes ^^ is the same as the other loco.

Can't quite see from the above photo, if there are tender wheel electrical pickups installed ?  ???

Whether brass or plastic trucks, the sideframe spacing looks like HO Standard Gauge to me.

Did both of these locos, originally have brass Narrow Gauge tender trucks ?

They were built as standard gauge locos in 1902,
and later converted to narrow gauge.

Basically, only the superstructure remained,
and they got new frames and drivers.

Seems they kept the tender trucks,
and simply pushed the wheels in on the original axles?

Hi Guys

THANKS !

I think the best guess is an early PFM, based on the info. Gerold provided.

I had two 'Mountain Model' Ks I sold, that were brand new in the box, test run only,
and a few other miscellaneous HOn3 brass, that I sold as well.

I just want to be able to provide as much info as I can, when I ebay the engine.

Moved to On30

Thanks again for the help !
