- now as Doug entertains us with his diesel conversion, I cant stand back and have to show my freak too. However, Buckhorn Mining isnt blessed with money in abundance so my version looks a little .... spartan.
- last fall I got a very incomplete - to say the least - International Shay. Basically, there was a damaged frame, the rear truck, lineshaft and engine, and the open frame motor with the worm gear arrangement.
inbelieveably, this parts ran ok when touched with 12V jumper cables. So I added only the pure essentials the mine shop might have added to get her running on diesel - two industrial engines (think this are Cummins 855's) , a homemade gearbox to connect the engines to the lineshaft, a gas tank, a canopy to protect the engineer from the desert sun and two headlamps pirated from two retired steamers. For power, the open frame motor had to go and a tiny faulhaber now hides in place of the former gearbox. The decoder fits between the frame rails.
- I am well aware that driving the truck through the old Shay steal engine is nonsense, however I didnt have the heart to remove this thing...
